Education for a sustainable future

Making a contribution to developing nations

In addition to global environmental preservation activities, the Kumon Group is working to improving education in developing countries.

Since 2014 Kumon, in cooperation with the Japan International Cooperation Agency, has been implementing a project to offer the Kumon Method in elementary schools operated by BRAC, an NGO from Bangladesh that provides many types of support for poverty stricken areas.

Kumon Method study is being offered for free in BRAC schools to students too poor to afford to go to school or who live in areas where there are no nearby schools. In 2015 an eight-month pilot project to offer the Kumon Method was carried out involving 17 schools and approximately 500 students. As a result, not only were math abilities improved and calculation speeds increased but a heightened interest in study and more proactive participation in classes were also seen.

In 2017 Kumon Centers were opened in Dacca, the capital of Bangladesh and in March of 2018 a new company, BRAC Kumon Limited, was established. This company is in charge of the opening and operations of company-operated Centers as well as franchised Centers within Bangladesh and of helping to spread the Kumon Method within Bangladesh. These are Centers targeted at mid- to upper-income groups. The goal is to utilize the profits gained in these Centers to provide free education in BRAC schools in order to carry out sustainable educational support for children from the poorest segment of the population.

Contributing to achieving SDGs

In September 2015, the United Nation set forth the Sustainable Development Agenda for 2030 with the aim of realizing a world in which poverty has been eliminated. There are 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 targets that have been specified.

The Kumon Group’s educational activities in places such as Bangladesh are aimed at making a contribution to the achievement of SDG #4: Quality Education for All.

In addition, we are also making a contribution to the achievement of SDG #17: Partnerships for the Goals by partnering with other companies to provide education in developing countries and to implement activities to protect forests.

In order to help more children in the world to discover their potential and develop their ability to the maximum, the Kumon Group will work to make a contribution to the achievement of the United Nation’s SDGs by providing with the Kumon Method.
