Contribution to developing countries

Toward sustainable support for education

In addition to environmental preservation efforts the Kumon Group is also making a proactive contribution to local communities.

A project was begun in 2014 involving the cooperation of JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) with the Bangladeshi NGO BRAC, which carries out a variety of anti-poverty activities, to implement Kumon Method study in elementary schools operated to by BRAC in Bangladesh.

The BRAC schools that have introduced Kumon Method study provide free education for children who are too poor to afford school or for children in areas where there are no schools nearby. Kumon Method math study is carried out by students each day beginning 30 minutes before regular classes begin. The aim is to boost academic skills.

About 500 students in third and fourth grade of elementary school in 17 BRAC schools used the Kumon Method for approximately eight months in 2015. As a result, students not only improved their proficiency in math and their calculation speed, they also became more proactive in their participation in class and increased their motivation to study.

A Kumon Center was opened in 2017 in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, as a Center for middle- and high-income students. By using the income from this Center for those of lower incomes, we can avoid charging them a tuition fee. In this way, we aim to offer sustainable educational support to the children of low-income families.

Contributing to the Accomplishment of Sustainable Development Goals

In September of 2015 the United Nation set forth the Sustainable Development Agenda for 2030 with the aim of realizing a world in which poverty has been eliminated. There are 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 Targets that have been specified.

We consider that educational support of the Kumon Group in Bangladesh and other places can contribute to the achievement of SDG Goal 4: Ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning.

In order to help more children in the world to discover their potential and develop their ability to the maximum, the Kumon Group will work to make a contribution to the achievement of the United Nation’s SDGs by providing with the Kumon Method.
