2016 Activities and
Environmental Data

At the Kumon Group, we promote the assessment and reduction of the environmental burden resulting from our business activities, and promote forest preservation in accordance with our Environmental Policy.

In addition, in order for anyone to be able to see the environmental data of the whole Kumon Group and of Group companies and offices anywhere at anytime, we implemented an environmental data management control system. Through the visualization of our environmental data, we promote efficient management and raise staff awareness of environmental issues.

Overall FY2016 environmental data for the Kumon Group versus the previous year (FY2015) are as follows: electricity usage: 101.2%, paper usage: 97.7%, paper put out for recycling: 134.5%

  • *The reporting period is the Fiscal Year 2016 (April 1, 2016 – March 31, 2017), but the environmental data and activities also include data from outside this period.
  • *Regarding electricity usage, the following locations are not included in this report:

Electricity usage

The Kumon Group promotes the reduction of electricity usage to contribute to reduction of greenhouse gases and to prevent global warming.

We have promoted simple activities that we can implement in our everyday work, such as adjusting the temperature of air conditioning, turning off lights when areas are not in use, and putting PCs on power saving mode to save energy. Moreover, in Japan, we have also promoted energy saving, both in hardware and software, by implementing LED lighting and thorough control of air conditioning in the Kumon Kyoiku Kaikan (head office building).

In FY2016 electricity usage fell 0.6% within Japan due to the introduction of LED lighting. However, in KNA electricity usage rose 11.2%. For the Kumon Group as a whole there was an increase of 1.2%.

We encourage all staff to redouble their efforts to save electricity.

CO2 emissions

The majority of greenhouse gases emitted by the Kumon Group are generated by electricity usage. Therefore, the volume of our CO2 emissions is calculated based on our electricity usage.

The calculation of CO2 emissions is based on the amount of electricity used. However the CO2 emission coefficient* differs according to country. Therefore, the proportions vary in relation to the amount of electricity used.

Through our efforts in reducing electricity usage, we have increased emissions by 1.4% compared with 2014 over the whole Kumon Group.

*The CO2 conversion coefficients used are the latest for each country as listed in CO2 Emissions from Fuel Combustion by the International Energy Agency (IEA). As the figures were disclosed only after our count, we retroactively corrected the data to the coefficients of the concerned fiscal year.

We have promoted the computerization of documents, paperless meetings, double-sided printing, and optimization of the layout of documents.
